Route plan

Day by day.

01

Day 1

Travel Day — Dhaka to Bandarban Town

Buses from Gabtoli, Fakirapool, Saidabad, or Arambagh run 8–10 hours (Shyamoli, Hanif, S. Alam, Saintmartin, Desh Travels all cover this route). Overnight buses are the practical choice — you arrive with the full next day ahead of you. Check in, then spend the evening at Buddha Dhatu Jadi (the golden temple) and the local market.

02

Day 2

Nilgiri & Chimbuk Viewpoints

Hire a reserved Chander Gari from town for the day — Nilgiri is the highest point most visitors reach, with panoramic views over cloud-covered hills, and Chimbuk offers a similar payoff on the way. This is a full but non-strenuous day; save your energy, tomorrow gets harder.

03

Day 3

Travel to Thanchi, Begin the Trek

Head to Thanchi by road or boat, then start the trek toward Amiakhum with a local guide — this is not optional here; the route isn't safely navigable without one, and guides are arranged easily in Thanchi or through your Bandarban accommodation. Expect a genuinely physical day of hiking, river crossings, and hill terrain. Overnight in a tribal homestay or guide-arranged camp near the falls.

04

Day 4

Amiakhum Waterfall & Return

See the falls in the morning light before the trek back to Thanchi, then transport back to Bandarban town. This is a long day — if your Dhaka-bound bus timing doesn't line up cleanly, budget for a possible extra night in Bandarban rather than rushing the trek back.

Local finds / bandarban

More around this spot.

Less-obvious stops worth adding when you have room in the route.

01
Easy detour

Madan Chhara Waterfall

A low-key waterfall stop that feels quieter than the bigger names. It works well as a short break between Bandarban town and the higher roads, especially if you want a less crowded photo stop.

Entry Free~20–40 minLocal jeep or CNG
02
Scenic detour

Boga Lake Loop

The lake is the star, but the real reward is the slow detour around the ridge. The road and trail approach feel far more remote than most standard Bandarban itineraries, especially in the early morning.

Entry ~৳20–50 plus local guide fee~2–3 hrs one wayReserved jeep + short local walk
03
Best for dawn

Nilgiri Sunrise Point

The views are the reason people go out this way. Skip the rush hour crowd and aim for an early start — the ridgeline opens up beautifully before the valley fills with haze.

Entry Free~1–2 hrsReserved jeep

Budget breakdown

  • Bus (round trip): ৳1,240–3,600 depending on Non-AC vs AC
  • Local jeep hire (Nilgiri/Chimbuk day): ৳2,500–4,000 shared for a reserved vehicle, split across your group
  • Guide fee for the Amiakhum trek: varies by arrangement, typically negotiated in Thanchi or through your Bandarban guesthouse
  • Homestay/camp near Amiakhum: basic, usually bundled into the guide arrangement rather than booked separately

A few things worth knowing before you go

  • This is not a casual add-on trip. The Amiakhum trek involves real hiking, river crossings, and hill terrain — comfortable footwear and a reasonable fitness baseline matter here more than on any other itinerary on this site.
  • A local guide for the Thanchi–Amiakhum leg is essentially mandatory, not just recommended — the route crosses terrain that isn’t safe to navigate solo, and guides also help with permit/checkpoint requirements along the way.
  • Winter (November–February) is the safest, most reliable window for the trek. Waterfalls look most dramatic just after monsoon (September–October), but trail conditions are considerably harder then — weigh the tradeoff honestly before committing.
  • Check current registration and checkpoint requirements with your accommodation or a local guide before you go — Bandarban’s interior areas, including the Thanchi/Amiakhum route, can require coordination that isn’t needed for the town itself.
