Day-by-Day Plan

1

Travel & Afternoon on the Lake

Direct buses from Dhaka run 7–8 hours (Shyamoli, Hanif, S. Alam, Unique, and Dolphin all serve this route from Saidabad, Fakirapool, or Gabtoli), or go via Chittagong city if that suits your schedule better. Check in, then head straight to the boat terminal — a rented boat for the afternoon covers the Rangamati Hanging Bridge and the small islands scattered across Kaptai Lake. Boats are hired locally, no need to book ahead.

2

Rajbari, Viharas & Return

Spend the morning visiting the Chakma Raja's Palace (Rajbari) and one or two hilltop Buddhist viharas by boat — most are welcoming to respectful visitors, though it's worth dressing modestly given the religious setting. Head back toward Dhaka by early afternoon to avoid a late arrival.

Budget breakdown

  • Bus (round trip): ৳1,200–3,600 depending on Non-AC vs AC
  • Boat hire (half-day, shared): typically negotiated at the terminal — cost splits well across a group, so this is noticeably cheaper per person for families or groups of friends
  • Hotel, 1 night: budget guesthouses available well under ৳2,000; nicer lakeside options run higher

A few things worth knowing before you go

  • October–March is the reliable window — clear water and comfortable weather. Outside that range, visibility and comfort both drop off.
  • Boat prices aren’t fixed, so it’s worth asking your hotel for a fair local rate before negotiating at the terminal directly — this is one of the few costs on this itinerary that benefits from a bit of local knowledge.
  • Dress and behavior norms matter near religious sites — Rajbari and the hilltop viharas are active places of worship and community life, not just photo stops.
